Today: First city-wide mandatory emissions trading scheme to start in Shenzhen

The schemes are two out of seven pilot schemes selected by the Chinese central government to try out various approaches to tackle fast raising greenhouse gas emissions with private-sector mechanisms. China's emissions intensity target (carbon dioxide emissions/GDP) of 17% reduction by 2015 from 2010 levels is broken down to cities and regions. Shenzhen for example will have to meet an emissions intensity reduction target of 21 per cent.

Second chance for effective climate change policy

The European Parliament will vote for a second time on whether or not to withhold 900 million emission allowances from the market over the next two years on 19th of June and in the first week of July after the original proposals failed earlier this year.

“The European Emissions Trading Scheme has achieved what it was designed to do, namely

- ensure the quantifiable limitation of certain industrial sectors’ emissions between 2008 and 2012 while at the same time

We crossed the 400 ppm CO2 concentration mark!

Earlier this month, a long-anticipated climate milestone was measured in Hawaii: The last time the concentration of Earth's main greenhouse gas reached 400 ppm, the Arctic was ice-free and sea levels were over 10 meter higher.

“With 400 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere, we have crossed an historic threshold and entered a new danger zone. The world must wake up and take note of what this means for human security, human welfare and economic development.”

Momentum is growing to tackle climate change

These schemes are expected to cover:
- around 850 million people
- around 30 per cent of the global economy, and
- around 20 per cent of global emissions.

The sooner action is taken, the cheaper the overall bill to our economies will be. Assuming a 2 degree target we would need to reduce emissions year-on-year by over 2 %. The report contains an interesting annex detailing the climate change policies of all major economies.
